Survivor: One World - Premiere

I've been thinking about starting this blog for a while now. One of my roommates came up with the cute title and I really like it. I thought this would be a good time to start this blog since the Spring reality shows are just starting or are part-way in now. I hope you enjoy!

Tonight's post will recap and review the premiere of Survivor: One World.

Jeff doesn't waste much time this season talking to the cast members when they first arrive on the island.  We do find out, however, that one of the cast members wants to be referred to as "Tarzan," while another wants to go by "Troyzan."  Jeff splits the men and women up into different tribes this season and informs them they have 60 seconds to get as much as they can off a supply truck for their camp.  One of the members from the men's tribe saves himself some time by stealing things from the women's pile, which is unattended the entire time.  I found this quite amusing, personally.

Jeff sends the tribes off to their respective camps; they don't yet know they'll be living in the same place.  On the way, the women (Salani) begin to form alliances.  It's been mentioned in previous seasons that the strongest alliances are the ones made on the first day of the game.  However, I'm not sure that simply picking the women who "look the strongest" is a good way to choose your alliance for the entire game.

Both tribes reach their destination and neither one is impressed that they'll be living next to one another.  They stumble on some chickens and while the two tribes originally agree to work together to catch them, once Chelesa gets two of them, the women change their tune - contemplating whether to share the chicken and what they want for it.  Matt of the men's tribe (Manono) is pretty annoyed by this development.

Colton, whom happens to be gay, makes friends with the women on the Salani tribe.  Matt forms an alliance with a couple of other men based on their physical strength.

Much of the tribes' interactions are spent bargaining for things - men for the chicken and women for help with their shelter and fire.  Thus far, I think the women are presenting themselves as weak and incapable of surviving on the island!  Who applies to be on the show and then doesn't learn how to make fire in case they get selected to go on?

Sabrina finds a hidden immunity idol.  Unfortunately, it's the Monona idol and she's required to give it to one of the men before the next tribal council.  She chooses to give the idol to Colton and they plot on how to get Matt voted off.

The immunity challenge was a disappointment as well.  Kourtney severely injures her wrist while taking a 25-foot fall into a net by not following Jeff's specific instructions on how to fall.  She's taken away for x-rays and the immunity challenge is halted when the men decide to take immunity rather than to finish the challenge.  I'm sure if the women found themselves in this position they would have done the same thing, but I would have been interested to see how the challenge would have played out.

Tribal council turned out to be rather pointless.  Jeff tells Salani Kourney broke her wrist in a couple of places and she must have surgery on it to repair the damage.  Since she won't be able to return to the game, nobody else is voted off the island.

This season of Survivor reminds me of some of the beginning seasons of the show.  It seems more primitive.  I wonder what, if any, twists the producers will come up with this season to make the show more entertaining.

What are your thoughts on the premiere episode?  Who do you like or dislike?
