MasterChef Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

As you may recall from last week, Christine and Josh had the two best dishes in the Elimination Challenge and were named team captains for the next Team Challenge.

The contestants are all asleep in their Los Angeles hotel when the judges start knocking on everyone's door to begin this week's Team Challenge.  It's 3am and not everyone is happy to see the judges so early.  This week's Team Challenge is to cook all the breakfast room service orders.  Occupants in the hotel can order: two eggs any style, homemade pancakes, oatmeal, eggs benedict, a fresh fruit salad, or an egg white omelet.

Since Christine had the best dish in the last Elimination Challenge, she receives the advantage of being the first captain to pick someone for her team.  Christine chooses Felix, Scott, Tanya, Mike, Stacey, and Ryan for her team (the Red Team) while Josh chooses Becky, Frank, Anna, Monti, David, and Tali for his team (the Blue Team).  Tali are shocked that he was picked last because he thinks he's such a  wonderful cook.

As an added advantage of having the best dish in last week's Elimination Challenge, Christine gets to trade one of her teammates for someone on the Blue Team.  She chooses to get rid of Ryan (yay!) and takes Becky from Josh's team.

Each team will have 90 minutes to prep and 90 minutes to serve.  Each team will cook for 130 hotel guests who have pre-ordered their room service along with the time they'd like to receive their meal.  After eating, each guest will vote for the team they feel had the best food.

Each team also must pick one person to act as an expediter, who will call out each order and make sure each cart has the correct food before it's taken to the guest.  Christine picks Felix to be the Red Team's expediter and Josh chooses Monti to be the Blue Team's expediter.

Josh decides to assign everyone on the team a duty for prep.  He tells Tali and Ryan to cut fruit for the fruit salad, Frank to make pancakes, and David to make oatmeal.  Frank thinks Josh should have asked everyone what they were comfortable with instead of just assigning people things to do.  Meanwhile, the Red Team discusses what everyone's strengths and weaknesses are and then assign tasks accordingly.

During prep, Gordon Ramsay asks if the Red Team feels they have enough sauce for the eggs benedict.  Graham Elliot doesn't feel the quality of the Blue Team's food is very good.  However, Monti is doing an excellent job as expediter; she's being very communicative about what she needs.  Felix, on the other hand, isn't communicating with the Red Team at all.  Christine is becoming worried and frustrated because she can't get any response from Felix.

It's time to start serving and Monti continues to be vocal about what she needs.  The Blue Team keeps asking Monti how many of each breakfast item they need and she's getting frustrated because she's overwhelmed by all the tickets in front of her.  She keeps telling her team to "Look at the board!"  Felix still isn't communicating with the Red Team, which is slowing them down.

As Chef Ramsay had predicted, the Red Team runs out of sauce for the eggs benedict.  Tanya starts making more while Christine takes charge and communicates with her team.

While the Blue Team is getting plates out to the guests, their quality of food is lacking.  They are putting out raw eggs, which the judges point out is unacceptable.  Joe Bastianich even has to bring back a plate because it has a hair on it.  Josh throws Monti under the bus, telling Joe its her fault as she's supposed to check the plates before they go out.  Josh gets into a power struggle with Monti, trying to tell her how to do her job as expediter.  The judges also complain about how awful the fruit salad plates look as well.

Felix is finally communicating with the Red Team and things are going more smoothly for them.

When time is up, Chef Ramsay tells everyone to stop, but Felix didn't hear him call it out, so she's still trying to send out food.  Chef Ramsay comes over to her and asks her if she wants to be disqualified.  Felix tells him she honestly didn't hear him say to stop.  Chef Ramsay tells her not to cheat.

Joe Bastianich goes to collect all the votes.  He tells the home cooks the winning team received 60% of the vote.  The winner is the Red Team - yay!  This means that the Blue Team must face a pressure test.

When it's time for the pressure test, the judges inform the Blue Team that three of its members will not have to participate in it.  The judges observed who were the heroes yesterday and who was out of their depth.  David, Frank, and Monti are the three home cooks who will not have to complete the pressure test.  They are safe and can go up to the balcony to watch the rest of their teammates compete.

Anna, Josh, Tali, and Ryan will all have to make a molten lava cake for their pressure test.  They all have the same ingredients at their stations and will have four attempts to make the perfect molten lava cake.  The contestants are only allowed to bring up one cake for judging, so the judges tell them to be sure it's their best one.  They have 45 minutes to complete this pressure test.

As they cook, Ryan complains that Monti should be down there cooking with them.  He can't ever seem to keep his mouth shut!  Ryan is the first home cook to take a cake out of the oven.  He puts it on a plate and it collapses instantly.  Gordon Ramsay says it looks like liquid diarrhea on a plate.  LOL!!

Everyone seems to be having trouble with their timing, though, as everyone's first attempt at a cake collapse.

Tali is the first one to bring his cake up to the front for judging.  It definitely has liquid chocolate inside, but it seems to be a bit underdone.  The judges don't give him any feedback, though.  Anna is the next contestant to bring a cake to the front for judging.  Graham says, "Great job," to Anna, so we know she's done well.

Josh is the next person to bring a molten lava cake forth.  The judges don't give him any feedback, but it does have liquid in the middle of it.  Is it cooked correctly or is it underdone?

Ryan is the last cook to bring a cake to the judges.  His cake has collapsed, but there's no more time to attempt to make another one.  He just hopes it will taste better than some of the other cakes do.

After the judges discuss among themselves, they ask Anna and Josh to step forward.  Chef Ramsay tells them that they made perfect molten lava cakes.  Joe Bastianich even tells Anna that she turned this pressure test into a demonstration.  They are both safe.

That leaves Tali and Ryan in the bottom two.  Instead of telling the contestants who is safe and who is going home, Chef Ramsay asks the home cook who thinks he should be going home to act on integrity and bring his apron forward.  There's a pause and then.....Ryan steps forward!!!  It definitely surprised me to see him take ownership for his bad molten lava cake.  This means that Tali is safe yet again while Ryan is going home.

What did you think about this episode?  Are you surprised Ryan went home?  Do you think Tali should have gone home instead considering he's been in the bottom two three times in a row?  Please leave your thoughts in the comments section.
