MasterChef Season 3 Episode 3 Recap

In Monday's episode of MasterChef, the last day of auditions as well as the first major competition of the season occurred.

As in the previous rounds of auditions, each contestant had one hour to prepare a dish and present it to the MasterChef judges, Joe Bastianich, Graham Elliot, and Gordon Ramsey.

The auditions began with a woman named Stacy, who declared she liked to drink a lot.  After tasting her food, Gordon Ramsay and Joe Bastianich decided Stacy shouldn't move on to the rest of the competition while Graham Elliot voted for her continuance.  Stacy was visibly upset by the decision as she began crying as she left the judging room.  Graham Elliot convinced Joe Bastianich to re-taste Stacy's dish, and after he did so, he changed his mind.  He came out of the judging room with an apron saying that he had never re-tasted a dish in MasterChef history before.

After Stacy's audition, the producers showed us a bunch of other contestants who didn't make it.

At the end of the final round of auditions, a man named David brought his dish to the judges.  He looked a lot like Graham Elliot.  David talked about his upbringing and started becoming emotional, which made the judges somewhat uncomfortable.  Joe Bastianich told David to pull it together, so he finished his dish, and the judges all agreed that he should continue in the competition.

For the first major competition of the season, the home chefs are told that they will compete against each other in cooking a dish with a special ingredient.  Gordon Ramsay warns them that while there are 36 of them now, this challenge will help the judges cut at least half of them from the competition.

The special ingredient? Ground beef! Immediately, Gordon Ramsay tells the home cooks he doesn't want to see 36 different burgers - he wants them to use the ground beef in a different way.

After the home cooks prepared their ground beef dishes, the judges divided them into three groups of 12 people each.  One group contained individuals the judges were sending through to the rest of the competition.  This group included the seven-feet tall man, Josh.  In another group, the judges placed people who were definitely going home.  Sadly, this group contained Soldier Joel.

Finally, the judges told the remaining 12 chefs they weren't sure about them - the judges needed to taste their dishes before they made decisions on whom would stay and whom would go.

The chefs were called up to the front of the room in groups of four to have their dishes tasted.  One group included Monte, who has the son named Danger, and Christine, the blind chef.  Both women were able to stay in the competition.

In another group, the judges pitted married couple Laura and AJ against each other.  While Laura remained in MasterChef, AJ was sent home.

David, the man who looks like Graham Elliot, was also allowed to continue on in the competition.

The judges shrank the group down from 36 to 18.  Do you have a favorite chef yet?  If so, who is it and why?
