MasterChef Season 3 Episode 6 Recap

Tonight the top 15 home cooks continued their quest to become the next MasterChef.

The episode starts with a Mystery Box Challenge.  What's in the box?  Various body parts of animals, such as cow tongue, a lamb's head, and bull testicles.  Most of the home cooks are grossed out about the prospect of having to cook with these parts, and Christine is thankful she can't see what's in her box.  Likewise, I'm glad I couldn't see it!  LOL.  I know that some call these parts "delicacies," but eating any of the animal parts they had to work with didn't sound appetizing to me at all.

The contestants have 90 minutes to cook.

Monti decides to work with the testicles.  Joe Bastianich tells her the testicles are very difficult to work with. Monti replies that doing something easy isn't going to impress him.  Ryan tells Gordon Ramsay that he will be the next MasterChef.

When time is up, the judges determine which three dishes look the best for tasting.  Becky is called to the front first.  She's made a sweetbread duo with chicken liver pate on buttered toast.  Joe Bastianich remarks that her dish could be served in a restaurant as an appetizer.  All the judges agree that the dish is delicious.

Ryan is called up next for his sweetbread with potatoes and shallot curry.  Graham Elliot notices that there's a great balance of sweet, salty, and sour in the dish.

Finally, the judges want to taste Christine's dish (yay!).  She's made panko fried sweetbreads with bok choy.  The judges agree her dish is delicious.

They discuss it and decide the winner of the Mystery Box Challenge is Ryan.  My roommates and I were sad about that since we can't stand the guy...

Ryan gets the opportunity to choose what everyone will cook with for the Elimination Challenge.  This week's theme is fresh versus convenience ingredients.  Ryan can choose from Ahi tuna, ham, or crabs.  He chooses crabs as the ingredient everyone will use in their dishes.  He also gets to decide which seven cooks will get to cook with the fresh crabs and which seven cook with the canned crabs.  Ryan gets to watch from the balcony while everyone else participates in the challenge.

Everyone has 60 minutes to cook.

Ryan gives Monti canned crab as he really wants her to go home.  He gives his "partner in crime," Tali fresh crab to give him an advantage.  He also gives a live crab to Christine - that's just cruel.  I think he's threatened by how amazing her talent is.  Christine struggles with the live crab; she's scared she'll get pinched.  She ends up getting pierced by the crab.  While the medic comes to look at her, Ryan stands on the balcony and smiles!  What a horrible little man he is!!

The judges are baffled as to why Helene has so many different pots on her stove and remind her she's cooking one portion, not 10! LOL.

When time's up, it's time to taste.

Tali's up first.  Even though Ryan gave him a big advantage, he has managed to do a horrible job with his dish.  Graham Elliot remarks that his dish looks like a horror movie.  Tali's made paprika buttered crab with saffron and watercress sauce.  Chef Ramsay tells Tali that based on this performance, he would start packing his knives if he were him.

Next up is Josh who's made Thai crab trio curry and rice with a crab cake and some salad.  The judges love the dish.  Graham remarks that it's spicy in a good way.

Mike's made a crab bisque.  The judges don't enjoy his dish.

The judges love Tanya's dish this week - Thai green curry with rice.  Joe says Frank's dish reminds him of Hamburger Helper.  Frank made Orrechiette Puttanesca with homemade pasta.

Christine made Ceviche cocktail with tomato juice.  Chef Ramsay tells her the dish is stunning and jokingly asks if she's really blind.  He tells Ryan he really f*cked this one up and there is no disadvantage when it comes to Christine.  Chef Ramsay remarks she cooks like an angel every time.  He tells Ryan to come taste Christine's dish, and Ryan admits that it's really good.

Helene is up next.  She's made dungeness crab soup with cornbread.  Graham tells her she wasted great product.  Joe says she's done a great job of taking fresh crab and making it taste exactly like canned crab!

Monti's the last home cook to have her dish tasted.  She's made a Scotch egg with a crab shell.  Chef Ramsay tells her it's delicious and that she's a freak and it works!  Joe asks Monti why she can't be confident with her cooking as she's made a great dish.  Looks like Ryan won't get his wish for Monti to go home. :)

After the judges have a discussion, they decide Josh and Christine had the best crab dishes, so they will be team captains for the next team challenge.  The judges call four people to the front for having the worst dishes in this Elimination Challenge: Tali, Mike, Frank, and Helene.  The judges note that three out of the four had fresh crab instead of canned crab.

Frank and Mike are deemed safe and can go back to their stations.  This leaves Tali and Helene in the bottom two.  Helene is sent home, making Tali safe.
