MasterChef Season 3 Episode 8: Battle of the Desserts

This episode of MasterChef began with a Mystery Box Challenge.  For anyone who may be unfamiliar with Mystery Box Challenges, the home cooks have to use some or all of the ingredients inside the box to create a dish.

What's inside this week's Mystery Box?  Mike's wishing for a steak!  He gets his wish; T-bone steak, peaches, paprika, corn, and watermelon are among the ingredients in the box this week.  The judges made a big point of making sure everyone knows the ingredients all came from Wal-Mart and only cost $15.....have to make that advertising money and all, you know.

The contestants have 60 minutes to prepare their dishes.

As usual, the judges walk around and look at what everyone is cooking.  Becky's making a dessert.  One of the judges comments that she's making a "ballsy" move.  Tali's steak is still cold when there are only 10 minutes left on the clock.  Two minutes until time is up and Christine has nothing on her plate! She gets it together though in time.

When time is up, the judges identify the three dishes they feel are the best and want to taste.  Frank is called up first.  He's gone out of his comfort zone this week and didn't make pasta again.  Yay!  Frank's made a T-bone steak with coleslaw and cream sauce.  All the judges really like his dish.  Joe Bastianich says Frank's dish tastes like he had the entire MasterChef pantry at his disposal.  Graham Elliot would have liked a little more acid in the dish, but still commends Frank for doing a good job.

The next home cook to be recognized is Tanya.  She's made a tarragon T-bone steak with corn puree and braised cabbage.  Graham asks her if this is her first time being in the top three in a Mystery Box Challenge.  Tanya affirms that it is.  Graham tells her "If you keep on cooking like this, it won't be your last time being up here."  Gordon Ramsay says she's "taken $15 of ingredients and made them into a $40 dish."

The final contestant to be called forward for her outstanding dish is Becky.  She's made a carmelized peach with a peaches and cream puree.  The judges really enjoy her dessert.  Graham likes the simplicity of the dish.

The judges discuss among themselves and decide the winner of tonight's Mystery Box Challenge is Tanya.  Tanya goes back to the pantry with the judges where she will receive the advantage for the Elimination Challenge.  The theme of this week's Elimination Challenge is the judges' favorite desserts.

Joe's favorite dessert is tiramisu.  Strawberry shortcake is Graham's favorite dessert.  Chef Ramsay's favorite dessert is a British trifle.  Tanya is informed that all three desserts will be made tonight, but she gets to decide who will cook each dessert.  She does not have to participate in the Elimination Challenge; she's safe.  The judges also tell her that the individual with the worst tiramisu, strawberry shortcake, and British trifle will be up for elimination this week.

Tanya heads up to the balcony to watch the rest of the home cooks make the desserts.  She's chosen Stacey, Monti, Becky, and Josh to make the British trifle.  Christine, Tali, Scott, and Mike will make the strawberry shortcake, the easiest of the three desserts.  Finally, Anna, Frank, David, and Felix will make tiramisu.  They have 60 minutes to complete their dishes.

As the contestants cook, the judges walk around and chat with them.  Joe tastes David's cheese for the tiramisu and remarks that he's made it into cream cheese.  Chef Ramsay tells Monti she needs more "sponge" for her trifle, so Monti runs around asking if anyone has any extra lady fingers.  Monti's confused about what Chef Ramsay is talking about.  Scott is overworking the dough for the biscuits for the strawberry shortcake and Graham says they look like "hockey pucks!"

Monti starts a fire.

After time is up, tiramisu is the first dessert up for judging.  Felix is called forward first.  Joe tells her that she hasn't made the tiramisu right.  Graham says Felix has the most finesse in the kitchen and this "just isn't her."  Gordon Ramsay tells her her tiramisu looks as sad as she does.  Felix is crying and knows this has most likely placed her up for elimination this week.

Anna's tiramisu is very well-done.  Graham says Frank's dessert is well-balanced.  David's tiramisu didn't win any points with the judges.  Chef Ramsay says the dessert is supposed to pick you up, but David's tiramisu has "torn him down."  Joe wishes he could send both Felix and David home this week.

Strawberry shortcake is up for judging next.  Mike is up first and Joe tells him the dessert is way too elaborate.  The judges all agree the dish isn't very good.  Christine's strawberry shortcake has blackberries in it, and while the judges like it, Gordon Ramsay says he's struggling to find the strawberries in it.

Tali is up next.  The judges agree that his dessert is good.  Graham even tells Tali that this is one of his best dishes.  Scott is the last home cook to be judged for his strawberry shortcake.  The judges aren't enjoying his dessert.

Finally, it's time to taste the British trifle.  Josh is up first.  Joe complains that the trifle is a bowl full of cream and no fruit.  Graham is disappointed that there are no distinguishable layers in it.  Monti is next and she's made a great dessert.  Chef Ramsay encourages her to stop being so nervous.

Stacey is next and she's put vinegar in her trifle, which sounds really gross to me.  However, Chef Ramsay says it's delicious and she's made a bold move!  Graham likes that her trifle is balanced and that he can see all the layers.  Becky is the final contestant for judging.  Joe spits her dessert out and says it's "gross."  He says he "wouldn't recommend eating it!"

The judges discuss among themselves.

They tell Stacey she has the best dish.

The bottom three this week are: Felix, Scott, and Becky.  The judges ask Becky to step forward.  They tell her while her dish was bad, she's lucky there were two dishes worse than hers.  Becky's safe.

Chef Ramsay tells Felix that she's had an amazing journey on MasterChef, but now it's time to say good-bye.....to Scott as he's gone home.  So, Felix is safe this week, and Scott's headed home.
