MasterChef Season 3 Episode 9 Recap: Battle of the Food Trucks

The home cooks head to Venice Beach, CA where they face their next Team Challenge.  The judges meet them on the beach, each driving a food truck.  This week, the home cooks will be divided into three teams who will each have their own food truck from which to serve.

Since Stacey had the best dish in the Elimination Challenge last week, she gets to choose her team first.  She chooses Tali, Frank, and Becky.  Stacey chose Tali because she knows she can beat him if her team loses the challenge and is forced to face the pressure test.  It's always good to have a back-up plan, right?  LOL!

Stacey also gets to choose the composition of the other two teams.  She puts David, Anna, Monti, and Tanya on a team because she knows Monti and David don't really get along that well.  This leaves Christina, Mike, Felix, and Josh, who make up the third team.

Josh steps up as captain for his team and Anna steps up as captain for her team.

Stacey also gets to choose each team's color, which will determine the type of food each team will serve out of their food truck.  Stacey picks red for her team; they will be cooking and serving Mexican food.  Josh's team gets blue; they will cook and serve Indian food.  Anna's team gets yellow, which means they will cook and serve American food.

Each team must create a $7 meal.  The team who sells the most food will be declared the winners while the team who sells the least amount of food will be declared the losers.  All the money earned from the three food trucks will go to Save the Children and the Boys and Girls Club of America.

The red team decides to make a steak taco and a vegetarian taco.  Becky thinks the orders might be hard to keep up with.  The yellow team wants to make a burger duo with a side of chips.  The blue team decides to make Chicken Tikka Masala on Nann with slaw.  I'm not sure what that is exactly, but then again, I'm not well-versed in Indian food either.

Gordon Ramsay goes around to each truck to see what each team is cooking.  He wonders why the red team is making two different types of tacos, so they decide to just make the beef tacos and forget the vegetarian ones.  Chef Ramsay also wonders why the yellow team is doing two burgers instead of one, so they decide to make one Texas burger.  Two minutes until they start serving, Monti tells Chef Ramsay they have no burgers on the grill!  This doesn't look so good for the yellow team and they haven't even started serving yet.....

When service starts, the red and blue teams are getting food out to their customers quickly.  Meanwhile, the yellow team tells their customers there will be a five-minute wait, which ends up being a fifteen-minute wait.

When the yellow team finally starts getting food out, Chef Ramsay finds a raw burger!  He tells the yellow team this is unacceptable and that there are small children eating here.  David says he's making burgers faster than they can serve them.  He might be making them, but they sure aren't cooked.

The red team doesn't have anyone in line toward the end of serving time, so Stacey goes over to the skate park to recruit some customers.

Together, all three teams have managed to raise over $2,000 for charity.  The winning team tonight, the team who made the most money, is the red team.  The losing team tonight is the yellow team, who made the least amount of money.  The yellow team argues about whose fault it is that they lost.

This week's pressure test has the home cooks making tortellini.  Joe Bastianich gives everyone a short lesson about how to make the tortellini.  Someone shows Christine, who was in the balcony, what Joe is doing, which is nice of them.

The home cooks are given 60 minutes to make 10 perfect tortellini in a simple sauce.  David is nervous about this because Joe said you need small fingers to form the tortellini and David has "sausage fingers."

Tanya really struggles with this pressure test.  Graham Elliot comes over to her station to check on her and she has a breakdown.  She feels defeated and seems to want to just give up.  Graham gives her some encouragement, telling her that she cooks with heart and that means more than someone who has great skills.  Tanya pulls herself together to finish the pressure test.

Anna also struggles with this challenge.  She doesn't get her water boiling until later, which results in her pasta being undercooked.  The only person who doesn't seem nervous about this challenge is Monti.

When time's up, it's time to taste everyone's dishes.

Anna is up first.  Joe doesn't say anything about her dish, but she can hear him chewing her pasta and realizes it's raw.  Chef Ramsay simply tells her that her pasta's raw.

When Monti is up, Joe asks her if she's ever made tortellini before and she says she hasn't.

David is up third.  Chef Ramsay says he has made great tortellini.  Joe wonders how David has made such perfectly shaped pasta with his big fingers.

Chef Ramsay tells Tanya her pasta looks strange.

The judges discuss among themselves for a moment.

They tell Monti and David they are safe.  They head up to the balcony to see who will be eliminated tonight.  Anna and Tanya are in the bottom two.  Chef Ramsay says he has never seen Anna struggle so much with a challenge.  He tells Tanya that this was her worst dish in the competition so far.

The judges decide to send Anna home, telling her that she's a great cook, to keep cooking, and that she came a long way in this competition.  She even beat her husband.  :)

What did you think of tonight's episode?  Do you think the judges sent the right person home?  Do you have any predictions on who will be eliminated next?  Please share your thoughts in the comments section!
