MasterChef Season 3 Episode 11 Recap

This episode of MasterChef begins with a Mystery Box Challenge.  What's in the box this week?  A sea urchin!  Some of the sea urchin's spines are poisonous, so Chef Ramsay calls everyone down front to show them how to properly take the sea urchin apart.  He lets Christine feel the sea urchin as he demonstrates.

The home cooks have 60 minutes to prepare a dish for the judges.  They are also given access to a pantry with a limited supply of ingredients.

As usual, the judges walk around and chat with contestants as they cook.  Christine feels Monti will have difficulty with this challenge.

When time's up, the judges pick three outstanding dishes to taste.  The first dish they choose is from Felix.  She's made a risotto with her sea urchin.  Chef Ramsay thinks her dish is delicious.  Graham Elliot tells her it's a complex dish and it features the sea urchin nicely.  Joe Bastianich tells her she's back in this competition again.

The second dish they choose is from Josh who's made some homemade noodles with shrimp and a uni cream sauce.  Joe asks Josh about his noodles.  Josh says he doesn't know what they're called and Joe tries to teach him how to pronounce them correctly, which is kind of amusing.  Joe tells him that he has the instincts of a winner.  Graham really likes the sauce Josh has created for his dish.

The last dish the judges choose to taste is from Stacey.  She's made shrimp sushi with uni aioli.  Joe comments that it looks like she's had a lot of experience making sushi.  Chef Ramsay tells her she's a dark horse in the competition and that she should believe in herself more.

The judges deliberate and come back to announce the winner.  The winner of this week's Mystery Box Challenge is Felix.  She heads back to the pantry with the judges to find out what her advantage for the Elimination Test will be.

This week's Elimination Test theme is fish.  Felix gets to decide which fish she and the other home cooks will utilize in a dish.  She chooses Halibut for herself - a medium to difficult fish to cook.  The judges think this is a bold move because she could end up being eliminated if she doesn't cook it right.  She gives Frank the catfish because she feels he isn't experienced in cooking it.  She gives the Rock Fish to Becky, another strong competitor.  She gives the John Dory to Monti.  Tali gets the Arctic Char.  Josh is given Sardines while Christine is given fresh salmon.  Stacey gets Striped Bass and David gets Yellowtail.

They are allowed five minutes to collect ingredients from the pantry for their dishes and then they will have 60 minutes to cook.

As always, the judges walk around to see what everyone is cooking.  When Chef Ramsay taste the sauce David has made for his fish, he says you need a fire extinguisher for your mouth after eating that!

Joe questions the simplicity of Christine's dish.

When time runs out, it's time to taste everyone's dishes.  Felix is up first.  She's made a poached halibut  with bamboo rice, asparagus, and lemon apple sauce.  Joe remarks that she has completely overcooked her halibut.  Chef Ramsay adds that her fish is dry.  Graham asks her when it's going to get serious for her; they're already down to nine.

Monti is next; she's made a fillet of John Dory with some baby asparagus and roasted almond sauce.  The judges agree that her dish is delicious and that Felix's plan to send Monti home didn't work.

Frank's made friend catfish with eggplant and some coconut leek sauce.  The judges love his dish as well, so Felix's plan fails again!  Graham says he thought Frank couldn't get that kind of flavor out of catfish.

Becky's up next and she's made fried rock fish with celery puree and some chardonnay sauce.  The judges love what she's done.

Next is David who presents deviled yellowtail, red cabbage slaw, and aioli potatoes.  Graham remarks that David didn't fully understand his ingredient.  Joe says the fish is raw and cold, that there's still ice in the middle.

Tali presents the judges with Arctic Char and green lentils.  Chef Ramsay says that when he watches Tali cook, he gets pissed off!  Joe tells him he has consistently disappointed the judges.  To camera, Tali tells us that the judges just don't see the genius and beauty in his food.  Full of yourself much there, Tali?

The last dish the judges taste is Christine's.  Felix gave her fresh salmon, which is an easy fish to work with.  Felix gave Christine an easy fish because Felix "loves her."  That was sweet.  Christine has made baked salmon with vegetables and rice.  Chef Ramsay is disappointed.  He tells her the bread crumbs are raw and that this is her worst performance in MasterChef thus far.  Joe says it tastes like salmon in a can.  Graham tells her it's the least visually appealing dish she has presented so far in the competition.

The judges deliberate and make their decision.

They announce the two best dishes as those being from Monti and Frank.  They will be team captains in next week's Team Challenge.  The three worst dishes this week are from Tali, David, and Christine.  Christine is called forward first.  She's crying and upset.  Chef Ramsay tells her she's had an amazing journey in MasterChef and that she's an inspiration.  She's safe!

This leaves David and Tali in the bottom two.  Tali is sent home.....finally!  How many times has he been in the bottom two in this competition?  David is safe.
