MasterChef Season Three Premiere Part One Recap

I know this week's recaps are a little late, and I'm terribly sorry about that, but I wanted to post them anyway.

Season three of Gordon Ramsey's MasterChef premiered on Monday June 4.

The show began by reminding the 100 contestants what they could win if they were to become this year's MasterChef.  This year the winner of MasterChef will win a cash prize of $250,000, a MasterChef trophy, and will have a cookbook published with the winner's best recipes.

After going around the country, the contestants were narrowed down to 100 of the best home cooks in the United States.  Each home cook had one hour to prepare a dish that they would present the judges to taste.  The judges, who are Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Joe Bastianich, tasted each home chef's dish and decided if the individual had what it took to possibly become the next MasterChef.  Those who were selected to go on in the contest were given special MasterChef aprons.

One of the first contestants selected to go on in competition was a 19-year-old boy who, when asked if he had a girlfriend, proudly and confidently stated that he's gay.  All three judges commended him on being comfortable with his identity.  The young man made Chinese dumplings for the judges, which they loved.  In fact, they said it was one of the best dishes they had tasted throughout the entire series of MasterChef shows! You know that had to make the young man feel good!

Another home cook accepted into the competition was a single mother named Monte Crystal.  The producers showed us some video of her with her son, who she named Danger.  Monte said that her son would thank her for that in college, but I'm not so sure...

Joe thought Monte was putting on an act, but she said she isn't.  Despite Joe's dislike of her, Monte managed to get an apron, signifying her continuation in the competition.

An 18-year-old named Samantha tried out for the show as well.  She made the judges a carrot cake.  She was really sweet and seemed really innocent.  She reminded me a little of Whitney from the first season, actually.  The judges couldn't decide whether she was ready to proceed in the competition, so they told her to go and get her parents.  Although her parents reassured the judges that she could handle it, the judges decided Samantha should come back next year to tryout for the show again.

Josh, a 7-feet tall guy who is really passionate about cooking and Ryan, a guy the judges felt came off as arrogant, also made it into the competition.

Christine, the first blind person to ever tryout for MasterChefalso made it onto the show.  I was really impressed myself and inspired.  The judges asked her how she became blind and she shared with them that about a decade ago, she got an autoimmune disease, which slowly took her vision.  The judges really liked her, but let her know that they were going to judge her dishes at the same level they judge everyone else's.

Being legally blind (with a severe vision impairment) myself, I am really rooting for this woman.  I think it's not often enough that disabled individuals are accepted on and allowed to compete in reality competitions, so when they are, I get pretty excited. :)

Another contestant, Audrey, stood out in the auditions when she made miniature versions of the judges.  She made it into the competition as well.  It was amusing to see Gordon Ramsey bite his own head off :)

In all, 13 individuals advanced in the competition while many others did not tonight.

Who was your favorite contestant in the first half of the tryouts and why?
