MasterChef Season 3 Episode 5: Cooking for the Marines Recap

As you may recall from the last episode of MasterChef, Frank and David were made team captains  as a reward for their excellent dishes.

Tonight, the home cooks faced their first team challenge.  They were to cook an entire entree for 201 U.S. Marines.  Frank was the captain of the blue team, and he chose Felix, Scott, Stacy, Tali, Tanya, Michael, and Christine to cook with him.  David, the team captain for the red team chooses Becky, Josh, Helene, Monti, Anna, and Ryan.

The teams are given two hours to cook a complete meal for 201 U.S. Marines.  Each team must have one protein, one vegetable, and one starch in their meals.  While Felix suggest barbecue chicken, Frank wants his team to do an Italian-themed dinner.  Felix goes along with it because Frank's the leader in this challenge.

The red team decides to cook pork chops for the Marines, but Joe Bastianich expresses his concern about them properly cooking pork chops in the time they've been given.

Michael from the blue team puts mushrooms on the grill with no seasoning, and the judges notice.  Frank decides to replace Michael at the grill with Tali.

The red team seems chaotic with no leadership until Becky steps in, taking over the role of leader.  Gordon Ramsay notices the pork chops are coming out raw and the red team must fix them before they can serve any of the Marines.

The red team is serving barbecue pork chops, cole slaw, and potatoes while the blue team serves grilled chicken and pasta salad.  Frank puts Christine on the serving line where she has to search for an empty spot on the Marines' trays to place the chicken.  She isn't comfortable or confident doing that, and I must say, I don't think I would be either.  He said he put her there so she could be productive, which I kind of took offense to seeing as Christine is a very capable woman who happens to be blind.

But I digress.....

While Joe Bastianich is out asking the Marines how they're enjoying their entrees, he finds another rare pork chop!  Things aren't looking so good for the red team.

After the Marines have finished their entrees, it's time for them to vote.  Ryan tells Monti to show a nipple to win more votes.  Wow........!  Despite the raw pork chops, the red team ends up winning the challenge, which means the blue team must face the first Pressure Test.

Back in the kitchen, the chefs tell Frank everyone on his team will be participating in the Pressure Test except for one person who can be saved.  Frank chooses Felix, but she insists she wants to cook in the Pressure Test.  Frank chooses Scott next, who also refuses to be saved.  Finally, Frank chooses Stacy, who seems to feel rather ashamed and guilty that she's chosen to sit the Pressure Test out.

For this Pressure Test, the home cooks have to cook an apple pie.  Each contestant is given essential ingredients to make an apple pie as well as some ingredients they can use to help their pies stand out among the others.  They have one hour and 15 minutes to complete this challenge.

Christine is nervous about baking as she must rely on her aide to tell her the color of the crust.  Christine's afraid she's going home tonight because she's at a disadvantage.  Scott's dough is falling apart and he gets his pie in the oven late.  Gordon Ramsay tells Scott if he ever gets a free pass again, he should use it!  Michael is putting cheese on top of his dough.....gross.

Time's up and it's time to taste the pies.

Frank's up first and the judges absolutely love the look and taste of his apple pie.  Tanya is up next.  Gordon Ramsay remarks that her pie is a "soggy mess."  Tali had cooked crust, but not enough filling in her pie.  Felix  also has a great-looking pie.  However, when Graham Elliot tastes it, he says it's not as sweet as he expected it to be.

Michael's pie didn't go over so well.  Gordon Ramsay says his pie is raw and Joe Bastianich notices the pie has no bottom crust and that the cheese is dry.  Scott's pie looks atrocious, but the judges seem to like the filling at least.

Chef Ramsay asks Christine what she thinks her pie looks like and she says she imagines it looks awful.  Chef Ramsay informs her that her pie is beautiful on the outside and tastes delicious!  He tells her to stop doubting herself so much.

The judges announce Frank, Tali, Christine, and Felix are all safe.  This leaves Michael, Tanya, and Scott in the bottom three.

Tanya is deemed safe by the judges.  My roommates and I think Michael is going home because he messed up his pie so badly (who puts cheese on apple pie??).  We were right - Scott is deemed safe and Michael is sent home.

What did you think of the judges decision this week?  Who's apple pie looked the best in your opnion?  Please share your thoughts in the comments section!
