MasterChef August 21, 2012 Recap: The Final Five

We're down to the final five home cooks at the beginning of tonight's episode of MasterChef.  The home cooks all have a Mystery Box in front of them.  What's in the box this week?

NOTHING!!

Everyone's confused.  The judges explain that each home cook will have the opportunity to create his or her own Mystery Box with up to 15 ingredients from the pantry.  The judges want to see who they are on a plate.

After everyone's gotten their ingredients, it's time to start cooking......but wait!  The judges say it would be too easy for them to cook with their own ingredients, so everyone has to give the ingredients they selected to the person in front of them!

While they cook, Chef Ramsay comments that he's worried about Monti cooking a Vietnamese dish as she has no experience with these kinds of ingredients.  However, Graham Elliot tells Chef Ramsay that he tasted Monti's dish and it's actually pretty good.

After time's up, the judges pick three dishes to taste.

Josh is called up first.  He's made a bread pudding.  All the judges really like it.  They joke that Frank probably would have made something very different with the ingredients he had selected for the challenge.

Monti is up next.  The judges really like her Vietnamese dish - a non-traditional Tom Kha Gai.

Christine is called to the front last for her pan-seared chicken.

Of course everyone hopes they will win the Mystery Box to get the advantage in the Elimination Test.  The judges deliberate and decide that Josh had the best dish.

Josh goes with the judges to find out what his advantage is for the Elimination Challenge.  Josh has to pick one of Graham Elliot's dishes to replicate.  Each dish Josh gets to choose from was prepared for and eaten by a celebrity.

His choices were: a corn bisque, eaten by Oprah Winfrey, Alaskan king crab, eaten by Jay-Z, and white tuna sashimi, which was eaten by President Obama.  Josh chooses to make the white tuna sashimi because it looks simple and he is confident he can master it.

As part of his advantage, Josh gets a basket of all the ingredients he will need to replicate Graham's dish.

The home cooks have a mere 30 minutes to prepare the dish.

One of the judges notices Monti putting heavy cream into the avocado pure, which turns out to be a big mistake.

The judges love Christine's replication.  She's complimented for her amazing palate.  Chef Ramsay says he's lost for words as the dish is so good.

Monti is criticized for her avocado pure.  One of the judges says that the pure might be the thing that keeps her out of the top four.

Frank is praised for his good replication.

Becky's dish is criticized for its presentation and taste.  The judges are rather disappointed in her.  Becky seems angry that the judges are criticizing her dish.

Josh's dish is criticized on its presentation and taste as well.  Josh added mango to Graham's dish to try to put some sweetness into it.  Graham said he doesn't think the dish needs any sweetness.  Josh is told that he needs to learn to walk before he can run.  If you ask me, Josh comes across as arrogant.  Why would he try and make Graham's dish "better?"  That just seems like a dumb move all around.

The judges deliberate and declare Christine the winner of the Elimination Challenge.

The bottom three are not surprisingly: Josh, Monti, and Becky.  Becky is sent back to her station as Josh and Monti's dishes were both worse than hers.

Monti is eliminated from the competition, but she's told not to give up on cooking because she's an amazing cook.  Josh is safe and remains in the competition.  Before she leaves, Monti predicts that Christine will win MasterChef.
